Defence & Secure Environments

Delivering construction projects within defence and other secure environments requires a different level of planning. Access, security clearance, restricted working areas and site-specific procedures all need to be considered before works begin, alongside the usual demands of programme, quality and technical performance.

At Derwent, we regularly deliver commercial flooring projects within secure and controlled-access environments across the South West. We understand that successful delivery starts long before our operatives arrive on site, ensuring the required security clearances and access requirements are identified and completed in advance.

Whether working directly for a client or as part of a wider construction programme, we work closely with principal contractors and site teams to ensure our activities comply with the requirements of the establishment.

Security requirements can have a significant impact on construction programming.

Operatives may require appropriate vetting or security clearance before accessing a site, while deliveries, tools, materials and vehicles can also be subject to additional controls.

We regularly manage these requirements and ensure the necessary clearance processes are completed for the operatives allocated to the project. This reduces the risk of avoidable delays once works are due to commence.

Our experience extends beyond defence establishments to other secure government environments. This includes work at HMP Channings Wood for the Ministry of Justice, where our operatives were required to meet enhanced clearance requirements before accessing the establishment.

Once on site, working practices must respect the operational and security requirements of the establishment.

Access routes, working areas, material movements, tool control and interaction with other trades may all be subject to site-specific procedures.

Our teams understand the importance of following these requirements and maintaining clear communication with site management throughout the programme.

Just as importantly, we understand that many secure establishments remain fully operational while construction works take place. Careful sequencing and coordination are therefore essential to delivering works safely and efficiently.
