Whether refurbishing classrooms during the summer holidays, completing corridors over half-term or delivering flooring as part of a new education facility, programmes are frequently fixed around the date pupils and students return.

At Derwent, we deliver commercial flooring and hygienic wall cladding projects across schools, colleges, universities and other education environments throughout the South West. Holiday periods provide an ideal opportunity to complete disruptive improvement works, but they also create challenging construction programmes.

Existing flooring may need to be removed, substrates prepared, moisture issues addressed and new finishes installed across multiple areas within a relatively short window.

Our experience enables us to assess these requirements before installation begins, helping identify potential programme risks at an early stage.

Careful sequencing, appropriate labour resources and coordination with other trades then become essential to ensuring areas are completed and ready for use when staff and students return.

In busy education environments, wall finishes are not only specified for hygiene, but also for durability and long-term maintenance reduction.

Systems such as Altro Whiterock are widely used within schools and colleges as a robust wall protection solution in high-traffic areas. While they provide a hygienic, easy-to-clean surface, they are equally valuable for protecting walls from impact damage caused by daily movement of students, trolleys, equipment and furniture.

We regularly install half-height Altro Whiterock protection along busy circulation corridors, stairwells and other high-traffic routes where walls are most vulnerable to scuffs, knocks and general wear.

By protecting these areas at the point of installation, schools and education providers can significantly reduce ongoing maintenance requirements, repainting cycles and repair costs—helping estates teams manage buildings more efficiently over time.
